PS525 Foundations of Psychopathology: Case Study A (350 words) Schizophrenia and Case Study B ( 350 Words) Dissociative Disorders

Reading and Resources:

Textbook Reference:Hooley, J. M., Butcher, J. N., Nock, M. K., & Mineka, S. (2017). Abnormal Psychology (17th ed.). Boston, MA: Pearson.

Read Chapter 13: “Schizophrenia and Other Psychotic Disorders” and Chapter 8: “Somatic Symptoms and Dissociative Disorders”, in your textbook, Abnormal Psychology.

Refer to pages 87–122, 291-307 and 324-326 in the DSM-5.

Your first Reading focuses on a new category in the DSM-5, the Schizophrenia Spectrum and Other Psychotic Disorders. You will study the positive and negative symptoms associated with these disorders, the different types of schizophrenia and the recommended treatments for these disorders. Your second reading for the week will introduce you to the mysterious world of dissociation — where the personality or consciousness splits apart into two or more pieces in an effort to protect itself. At its extreme, individuals develop Dissociative Identity Disorder (formerly known as Multiple Personality Disorder). You will learn about the various forms of dissociation, their prevalence, how to assess dissociation and recommended treatment options. Lastly, you will learn about the diagnostic distinction between two disorders, malingering and Factitious Disorder.

Assignment

Read both Case Study Attachments. Use DSM-5 Codes for assistance.

Schizophrenia Case Study A

Read Unit 7 Topic 1 Case Study A and Unit 7 Topic 1 Case Study B found in Course Documents. Choose ONE of the case studies to evaluate further the clinical data to determine the proper diagnosis/diagnoses. Render your clinical opinion as to whether this patient should be diagnosed with Schizophrenia. Be sure to cite specific DSM criteria when justifying your diagnosis/diagnoses. Additionally, identify any positive and/or negative symptoms present. If, in your opinion, your client does not have schizophrenia, what might be a differential diagnosis? What are your thoughts about the testing (reported in the case study) that was done on your client? How much credibility do you give the results?

Dissociative Disorders Case Study B

Read the Unit 7 Topic 2 Case Study found in Course Documents. Evaluate the case material and test results presented. Then answer the following question: Do you believe that this patient actually meets the criteria for Dissociative Identity Disorder? If not, how would you diagnose Ms. Fox? Justify your answer by referencing case material and test results and by citing specific DSM-5 criteria. What are your treatment recommendations for Ms. Fox?
